Our Experimental Piece So Far...

So far we have decided that our experimental performance piece will be set inside Tom Waits Brain. We found him to be quite an interesting character who had an intriguing way off thinking about certain situations that some may find odd or in some cases the symptom of his mental health issues. This links to the theme of mental health and its link with creativity because I believe that Tom Waits has often relied on his strange way of thinking in order to construct and inspire his creative pieces especially the lyrics to his songs. The layout of the performance piece is that it is set in Tom Waits brain however his brain works as a brain/american diner. We use hormones and chemicals in our play but simulate them through different coloured drinks that we have decided to offer to audience members as well as characters in the brain/bar to fully immerse them in our performance.

Within the piece we will often use information and facts to do with the brain to inform and suggest things to the audience. For example, we often show, during the performance, the two different sides of the brain as very different in the way that they work and perceive information which is actually true to the way that the brain does work.

We also are using many of the exercises that we have previously participated in and incorporating them in our performance using their process and outcomes as material for our performance. For example, the exercise in which a person would use an object or image to inspire them to create a story would be used as material where in we as characters in the brain react to the story and stimulus, the way chemicals and different parts of the brain would react to a stimulus that would make them feel a type of emotion.
